Physical stabilization is only part of recovery. Anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and other mental health concerns can contribute to substance use and relapse.
Trauma informed practices and co-occurring mental health care are integrated from the beginning so both sides can be addressed together.
Admission is based on what the clinical assessment shows a person needs not simply whether a bed is open.
Adults needing detox or structured residential support may be appropriate for the program. Medication-assisted treatment does not automatically prevent admission when it can be safely supported.
When someone needs more intensive medical or psychiatric care, the team helps connect them with a hospital, emergency department, or crisis service better equipped for those needs.
Each client's first days follow a structured progression:

Symptoms are monitored during stabilization. As clients progress, the schedule shifts toward individual therapy, group work, case management, meals, rest, and other structured recovery activities.
Communication, family contact, and visitation guidelines are also reviewed so clients know what to expect.
Healing Sands is located in Palm Springs, within the Coachella Valley. Clients come from across California and, at times, from out of state.
For some, distance from home is part of the decision. Stepping away from familiar routines, relationships, and triggers can create space to focus on recovery in a quieter desert setting.
Healing Sands is licensed through the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), the state agency responsible for regulating substance use disorder treatment programs.
The license covers the levels of care offered on-site.
